Filing a Complaint

If you feel that you have been the victim of housing discrimination in the area of rental housing, real estate sales, mortgage lending, homeowners’ insurance, home appraisals, zoning, land use, etc., you may file a complaint by any of the following means:

In the Private Sector

The Fair Housing Council of South Texas does not accept formal Federal administrative housing discrimination complaints. Instead, the Fair Housing Council of South Texas can assist consumers with filing formal administrative housing discrimination complaints with the Federal government. In addition, in order to collaborate a consumer’s allegations, the Fair Housing Council will conduct preliminary investigations of housing discrimination complaints to try to gather evidence of housing discrimination.

For assistance filing a formal administrative complaint with the Federal government, please call our office at (210) 733-3247 to complete a complaint intake over the telephone during our normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A complaint intake can also be done in person at our office by appointment only.

On the Federal Level

Effective March 2025, the Federal government will accept formal administrative housing discrimination complaints submitted online only.

However, if you are a person who needs assistance filing a complaint due to your disability, then you can call the Federal government at (800) 669-9777 and ask them to make an exception and reasonably accommodate you, due to your disability, by providing you with assistance in filing your complaint.

The deadline to file a formal Federal housing discrimination complaint with the Federal government is one (1) year from the date of the discriminatory incident and/or action taken by housing provider.

On the State Level

The Texas Workforce Commission–Civil Rights Division (TWCCRD) will accept formal administrative housing discrimination complaints submitted via telephone or online.

If you live in Texas, you can file a complaint with TWCCRD’s Intake Department over the telephone by calling (888) 452-4778.

2. VIA ONLINE:

Important Filing Deadlines

The deadline for filing a formal administrative housing discrimination complaint with the Federal government is one (1) year from the date of the discriminatory incident and/or action taken by the housing provider.

The deadline for filing a civil lawsuit is two (2) years from the date of the discriminatory incident and/or action taken by the housing provider.
