About Us

The Fair Housing Council of South Texas is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to promoting equitable housing opportunities and advocating for open, accessible, and inclusive communities across South Texas. In addition, the Fair Housing Council of South Texas engages in efforts to address discriminatory housing practices in the areas of rental housing, real estate sales, mortgage lending, homeowners’ insurance, home appraisals, zoning, land use, etc.

Founded in September 1996, the Fair Housing Council of South Texas promotes fair housing through free services offered to housing consumers which include complaint investigation, testing, housing counseling, advocacy, mediation efforts, enforcement actions, outreach activities, and educational trainings.

Job Title: Tester

Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour with work-related mileage reimbursed at .70¢ per mile (or current GSA mileage reimbursement rate for privately owned vehicles)

Employment Status: Per diem; Part-time

Work Schedule: Testers are “per diem” employees who are scheduled for work on an “as needed” basis and do not work a fixed schedule. Per diem employees are not eligible to receive benefits.

Job Description

  • Participate in a mandatory, paid training session regarding testing methodology, protocols, and reporting.
  • Travel to apartment leasing offices or other housing sites during the companies’ normal business hours (which may include weekends and evening hours, if applicable) to inquire about available housing.
  • Collect information about your experience at the test site.
  • Completed test report forms to objectively report on your test experience and information obtained during your visit.
